Dear friends,
Given the lack of determination shown by the Minister of Culture in his public interventions regarding the extraordinary urgent measures that must be taken to preserve the diverse cultural manifestations of our country, the entire sector regrets the helplessness to which it is subjected, and asks the ministry for clarity and forcefulness in its action.
Culture is a basic necessity both in its social and economic aspects and for coexistence in values.. In these days when culture, in an altruistic way, is forming part of the daily solution to the confinement of the entire society, the sector must be recognised as an essential good that contributes to personal and social development and, also, as an economic engine that contributes 3.2 % to the national GDP, obtaining public financing in terms of GDP of only 0.06 % from the State*.
It is therefore incomprehensible that Rodríguez Uribes does not assume his responsibility to provide urgent solutions, which are necessary.
We will only overcome this global crisis together, but unity will require that each person in charge seek solutions and plan the measures that each sector requires. The culture sector has made a great effort to coordinate and reach consensus, and has proposed to the ministry a series of measures necessary to avoid its collapse, and so that current and future generations can continue to create, and thus, provide society with the opportunity to reflect, empathize and, of course, dream. Although some measures will have to be prioritized over others, and a roadmap must be in place, that roadmap cannot wait.
ASSITEJ urges the minister to come up with an action plan. Ensuring that future generations have access to quality performing arts for children and young people cannot be questioned. It is the State's duty.
In recent weeks, ASSITEJ Spain has been working, in coordination with various sectoral entities and associations, to promote support measures for the sector that help to try to alleviate the effects that the current alert situation has generated in our activity.
We have held various meetings and collaborated in the table that prepared the 52 extraordinary measures to address the consequences of the crisis caused by COVID-19 in the performing arts and music sector. We presented these measures at the meeting we held with the Minister of Culture and the INAEM last Monday, April 6. We will continue to work hard to ensure that culture in general, and our activity in particular, can continue to provide society with a space for thought, humanity and social transformation.
