With deep sorrow, we at ASSITEJ Spain join in the grief over the passing of Luis Matilla, an essential figure in children's and youth theater in our country. His legacy will live on in the memories of those fortunate enough to enjoy his work.

Luis Matilla was an indispensable figure in the renewal of the Spanish stage, distinguished by his commitment to quality theater that connects with new generations, educating and raising awareness among young audiences. Throughout his career, he received numerous awards, including the ASSITEJ Spain National Award, which celebrates his work in promoting quality theater for children and young people.

Among his works are: Under the Sky of Gaza, which earned him the ASSITEJ Spain Award for Children's and Youth Theatre. His work has also been recognized multiple times with the SGAE Award for Children's and Youth Theatre, an award he has received four times for his plays. Julia's Tree, Red Apples, The Last Course and The boys from the barracksEach of these texts has left an indelible mark, addressing relevant and universal themes that resonate with young audiences.

Luis Matilla was not only a prolific playwright, but also a passionate advocate of the importance of theater in shaping the identity and sensitivity of young people. His vision and dedication have inspired generations of artists and educators, and his influence will continue to be a benchmark in the future.
