March 20, 2012On World Theatre for Children and Youth Day, the Miguel de Cervantes Virtual Library has launched a portal dedicated to the Spanish Center of the International Association of Theatre for Children and Youth (ASSITEJ).

ASSITEJ was founded in 1965 out of the recognition that theater is an artistic expression that has the power to unite people from all over the world and plays a key role in developing the sensitivity and critical thinking of new generations. Present in more than 80 countries, it shares with UNESCO the promotion and defense of the right of children and young people to access culture and has had a Spanish branch since 1966.

ASSITEJ-Spain works to develop theater for children and youth in our country. The awarding of prizes for creation and research, the launch of four publishing collections, the establishment of a library, and the foundation of a significant documentary archive are some of its most notable initiatives.

The new Cervantes Association portal, the result of an agreement signed in late 2011 between ASSITEJ-Spain and the Miguel de Cervantes Virtual Library Foundation, features a collection of plays, aimed at young people and children, written by Spanish playwrights such as Juan Cervera, Luis Matilla, Tomás Afán, Jesús Campos, Alberto Miralles, Antonia Bueno, and Itziar Pascual. This catalog will continue to expand in the future, both with the Association's library collections and with the ongoing contributions of its members. These plays include plays and research and study of children's and youth theater.

The portal also offers the proceedings of various conferences organized by the Association since 1967 and the newsletters published in 1970 (AETIJ Bulletin) and 1973 (Ibero-American Bulletin of Theater for Children and Youth, which collects research, creative texts and information on theatre for children and young people).

Miguel de Cervantes Virtual Library

The Miguel de Cervantes Virtual Library (www.cervantesvirtual.com) was created in 1999 at the initiative of the University of Alicante, Banco Santander, and the Marcelino Botín Foundation. It is currently under the auspices of the Miguel de Cervantes Virtual Library Foundation, chaired by writer Mario Vargas Llosa, winner of the 2010 Nobel Prize in Literature. Its objective is to disseminate Ibero-American literature and literature throughout the world; it offers free access to more than 140,000 bibliographic records online.
