At ASSITEJ Spain and Aptent Accessible Theatre, we continue working to ensure full access to the performing arts for children and young people, and to this end, we are launching the "First Accessible Stage" project.
The initiative aims to expand the reach of shows and programming aimed at children and young people by implementing specific measures to facilitate their participation and enjoyment.
The project, which will run until June 2025, focuses on two key interventions:
-First, a guide will be developed that will compile measures for developing an accessibility plan for productions aimed at this audience. This guide will include an accessible glossary of concepts and will be enriched through a process of active listening with social organizations and families, ensuring that the real needs of children, young people, and their communities are addressed.
-Secondly, four theater, dance, circus, and puppet companies will be trained in creating accessibility plans for their productions. These companies, selected through a public call, will receive specialized training in stage accessibility and advice on implementing resources such as subtitling, audio description, sign language, touch tours, relaxed performances, and easy-to-read programs.
With "First Accessible Stage," we seek to create inclusive performing arts spaces and foster a culture that invites all children and young people to enjoy the performing arts. This project represents a significant step toward creating the necessary environment for full access to the performing arts for an audience that is unfortunately constantly underserved.
