September 6. I embark on my journey to Europe.
September 8th. The night is dark. The sea is rough.
September 10th. I've done it. I've crossed the Mediterranean.
On the outskirts of any city, in an old courtyard, Amal She's hiding in the midst of a flight. She's a young woman who, after experiencing the horrors of war, has had to leave her country in search of refuge in Europe. She doesn't know that, in that same place, another girl has also sought refuge to escape her own anxieties and worries. Perhaps they will discover they share more than they could have imagined... That despite their differences, they both long to find a safe place where they can feel welcomed and free from violence and uncertainty.
Amal, in Arabic, means hope. And that's what we want this story to be. A story about people, life, and the hope of creating a better world. In a complex and difficult time in many ways, we believe that artists must take part, get involved, and commit to the society in which we live. This also entails telling stories that provoke reflection, proposals that challenge the audience, that move. They reinforce the role of culture as that bastion of freedom from which we forge a critical spirit necessary to reinvent the world we inhabit. In short, they contribute to creating a more just society.
